Virtual Construction & Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data throughout the life cycle of a facility, including the processes of construction and facility operation.
BIM uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software in an effort to decrease the time and resources that are wasted in the process of designing and constructing a structure. BIM provides the potential for a virtual information model to be handed from design team to contractor and subcontractors and then to the owner, adding their own additional discipline-specific knowledge and tracking of changes to the single model.
The result is anticipated to greatly reduce the information loss that occurs when a new team takes “ownership” of the project as well as in delivering extensive information to owners of complex structures far beyond that which they are currently accustomed to having. One common benefit to BIM is the early detection for clash potential between MEP systems, and designing a sequence for MEP installation that benefits the overall project schedule.
